“Uncertain States” premiered in March 2015. Almost a year later, the relevance of the subject hasn’t diminished – on the contrary.
Back then, we described uncertain states as a dissolution and disintegration of established systems of value and representation in our culture and society that takes place in a process of smooth or sudden change and assimilation. And we stated: this process also creates a new reality for each individual that is neither homogenous nor manageable. We said that this has positive and negative effects: on the one hand, the freedom and creative opportunities to construct an individual lifestyle; on the other, the insecurity and incalculability in respect to how living conditions and plans can develop.
“In connections, variations and time shifts within individual traces of movement, Hell and Baumann create an uncompromising artistic system in which the dancers have to deal with an increasing number and many different parameters simultaneously. In the dynamics of constant change and the increase in complexity, control turns into the loss of control, security becomes insecurity and stability develops into instability.
Uncertain States thus provides the relationship between societal development and subjective stages of perception with many choreographic levels that make this liberating and disturbing phenomenon mentally and physically tangible.”
“When the dancers in hoodies create an anonymous crowd at the end, then there seems to be nothing left that they can hold on to.” (Sandra Luzina, Tagesspiegel)
